Paying the Piper

We're about a week or two from welcoming the hummingbirds back for the 20121 summer season. It's like clockwork. Funny thing is that they usually announce their arrival by flying stationary in front of one of the windows in our house. Last year, it was the window in our front room. A sole hummingbird just hung in midair seemingly peering in at us as we sat pleasantly shocked into silence at the abruptness of his appearance. Dude.

I'm convinced that he was the advance man because we didn't see any more of him or his kind for a good week or two after the sighting despite having immediately put out our two feeders at opposite ends of our home. I have no reason to believe that these aren't the same birds that come very year although I have no proof to offer.

I think that the hummingbirds that come to the feeders on opposite ends of our house for the summer season are not related and never the twain shall meet. That is to say, they don't go back and forth between the feeders. Again, I can't deny or confirm that assertion since I cannot distinguish one from the other. You'd think I would figure this out after all these years but I haven't and that's that. No sense in beating a dead horse.

I bought a bottle of hummingbird food at Walmart to fill the feeders when the time comes. I never buy that red stuff you see here and there because I worry about the impact of the red dye and what it might mean for the bird's health. This particular brand that I picked up has an extra dose or two of sucrose and it's supposed to give them a bit of juice to replenish energy stores depleted over the course of their journey up from Mexico and environs. It's the least I can do. Right? I'll transition to my own sugary brew soon enough so not to worry.

We saw an Oriole or two last year and we tried to encourage more of them to come around by putting out oranges and other fruits that we thought they might like. The fruit seemed to attract more squirrels and other critters than Orioles so we gave up on doing that for the time being. I'm not sure if we need a special feeder to keep the other critters off the oranges, etc., but I'm thinking I might like to look into that option. The Oriole is such a beautiful bird so wanting to see more of them isn't such a bad thing. Right?

My new espresso machine arrives today. I saw one on sale over the weekend and I pulled the trigger. It's a step up from my decades old Krupp machine that is still serviceable after all these years but I'm ready for a change. It has a couple of extra bells and whistles one of which is a water reservoir so I won't have to fill the water tank each and every time I want to brew an espresso. I tend to want to pull my shots to make sure that my beverage is not watered down and that I get the deepest and darkest flavonoids that my coffee beans have to offer.

Fast forward 24 hours and I have a few thoughts on this new purchase of mine. My first thought is that I should have spent a few more dollars and got myself a better machine than the one that arrived via Amazon yesterday. It works as advertised but it has a few things that work less well than my old machine. For one, I can't easily get the cups I have beneath the spout where the coffee comes out. I have to remove a couple of trays and basically jury rig the unit to make it work right. Is it me or does the coffee come out too quickly?

In other words, the water runs through the grinds as though the grinds aren't even there. I did a double take on the grounds left behind after brewing a cup of espresso and thought I noticed that some grinds that weren't even wet. Maybe I need to make sure that I grind the espresso beans extra fine next time around before filling the filter with the grinds. If the coffee grind is too coarse then that might result in a "watery" cup. How about that steaming spout? It's not long enough for one thing. How am I supposed to get my pitcher of milk under there? The frothing that I was able to do went well. I think the missus will be pleased.

So, I'm sipping the swill that I made with my new machine not knowing one way or another if I was getting the full impact of the flavonoids that my lovely beans have to offer. It tastes a little watery but maybe that's because I watched as the coffee came out of the spout and I just thought it came out way too quickly. Almost as though, quite honestly, that the grinds put up next to no resistance and we all know that the resistance is the key to getting a flavorful cup when all is said and done. Let's just say that the jury is still out.

The state of Arizona is trying to do a forensic audit of the 2020 election. The democrat party has dispatched their usual contingent of rabid attorneys to try and put a stop to it. They don't want anyone to know just how the rampant and widespread the cheating and stealing of votes in the State of Arizona was and how it contributed to the presidency being snatched from its rightful winner, Donald J Trump. It wasn't just in Arizona but you have to start somewhere. As Arizona goes, so goes the nation as the saying goes. Let's git er done!

Bumbling Joe Biden will have his first State of the Union speech tonight. I don't personally know anyone who will be watching much less anyone who is even interested in hearing what he has to say. He is such an asshole. 2022 and 2024 can't come soon enough. Republicans need to take back the House, the Senate, and the Presidency.

What is this balderdash I hear about Lyn Cheney thinking about a presidential run? She is one of just a handful of republicans who voted to impeach Trump so I'm guessing she's looking for a way out since the entire republic establishment in her home state of Wyoming has now turned against her after her impeachment vote.

Looks like we're in for a rainy day here on the coast. I don't pay much attention to the forecasts from day to day so I'm not quite sure what to expect when I get up every morning. I'll play it by ear and I'm fine with that approach. I almost welcome days like this when I get to take a break from exercising or other due to a change in the weather.

It works less well when I don't have something to fill in the void but, even then, I can kick back and just take the day off as it were. I've got some chores to keep me anchored and maybe I'll make up for the half hearted guitar practice that I muddled through yesterday. Twang twang.

The missus will be working so maybe I can plan to make dinner of some kind. We have a container of vegetarian chili that I took out of the freezer yesterday so we could have that for dinner. I had such a large portion of Shepards Pie last night for dinner that you would think I wouldn't need to eat for a day or two. I wish that were the way it worked. One forkful led to another and the next thing I knew the entire dish was gone. I'd forgotten how much I like that concoction. Chasing it down with a whoopee pie was the next best thing to having a death wish.

The missus put together a nice strawberry shortcake last night. I'm not sure the two Bisquick cakes came out quite right since they looked a little flat and a little too pale coming out of the oven. She wasn't convinced that the oven was getting hot enough after opening the oven door and not feeling the kind of heat that one might expect from a 425 degree oven. I've not had problems with the oven one way or another so we agreed to disagree and we went about our business. The home-made whipped cream was sweet but not too sweet and the strawberries, which we always buy frozen since they are stewed in their own sugary juices, were the finest kind.

It looks like the rental at the lake we were interested in later this year is not going to work out. I just heard from my brother from another mother and he said something about the fact that the place is already taken for the week that we wanted. Oh, well. We have no plan B so there's that. Maybe we'll just take a few day trips here and there. I think I don't care one way or another. This pandemic thing has nipped a lot of things in the bud so maybe the nipping continues well into 2021. It's kinda looking that way.

I'm having some trouble with this blog this week for some reason. I'm babbling my way through it all as I usually do but even that doesn't feel like it's as easy as it used to be. I can probably make up for any shortfalls by the time Sunday rolls around so I'm not worried in the least. It does concern me a little bit that maybe I'm running into a dry spell of sorts. How long it lasts, if it comes along at all, is anyone's guess. Just when I think I'm coming into my own I'm finding that maybe nothing could be further from the truth. Life is funny that way.

I'm thinking about suggesting to the missus this morning that we go across town to get a couple of breakfast sandwiches at a place in Exeter we've been meaning to visit. It's a new bakery sandwiched in between a couple of shops in a small mall on the south end of town. We're not big breakfast sandwich people but it would be a change in our usual morning routine and I'm thinking that changing things up just this once might be a good idea. I'll have to be careful on how I propose it all since she may or may not be receptive depending on her mood. We all know how old habits die hard.

If it's April, it's time to get my old car inspected. I gave her a good sprucing before dropping her off at the shop last night. With any luck, my favorite mechanic will overlook some of her more glaring deficiencies and give me a sticker that will extend the life of the car for another 12 months. By his own admission, he has never replaced a catalytic converter so I should be good to go unless he decides he wants to make an exception in my case. The car is 21 years old for chrissakes. You can't possibly expect her to meet or exceed today's standards when it comes to saving the planet from polluting gasses or other fumes too noxious to mention.

If he decides that he wants to take it for a spin or maybe charge me a little extra to replace this or that then I think that's something I can live with. I can't come right out and bribe him and truth be told I wouldn't know enough about that sort of thing to even attempt it. What do I do? Do I leave a few shillings in the glove box for him to help himself to? Do I tell him to fix whatever needs to be fixed costs be damned? We both know what I'm trying to achieve when I bring it to him each year so I'm not sure why this year should be any different. If he rejects it outright, I'm fucked. Think positive thoughts, Johnny. A prayer or two might help as well.

Well, I'll be damned if those prayers of mine didn't work out. Turns out that my car is old enough now so that it doesn't need to be "plugged in" in order to pass inspection. Those are my mechanic's words, not mine. That means that it doesn't need to pass any shuck and jive emissions tests in order to pass inspection. I don't think I knew that my car was old enough to qualify for any such exemption so I am, as they say in the business, good to go. Not only did my car pass inspection but the inspection cost less since there were fewer tests to administer. Par-Tay!

I was asking Mrs G the other day how her free six months of Apple Music was coming along. "Not too well," she responded. She followed up that comment with something along the lines of, "if you have to look up in YouTube on how to use the application then that should tell you how difficult it is to use." I found that to be a fairly incisive comment coming from a 90 year-old who has spent most of her life not using a computer. I happen to agree with her on that particular app and think that Apple could do better. Creating a playlist shouldn't be that difficult. Maybe you need to buy the music before you can create the playlist? She's already made plans to pipe in other music so not to worry. She's got this.

What the hell is the FBI doing raiding Rudy Giuliani's home at 6 o'clock in the morning? It's Biden's Stasi I tell you. It's all about going after your political enemies to make sure that they no longer pose a threat. The raid was ostensibly done to obtain electronic devices which the FBI would then review for FARA violations. We all know that's a crock. They're looking for something, anything, that they can use to rope in Trump or have Rudy turn on Trump. Trump remains the one candidate that can win the presidency in 2024 and Biden and his brown shirts are having none of it. Here's the problem they have: There is nothing on Trump.

And meanwhile, Hunter Biden walks around a free man despite everything they know about him and his illegal activities as they relate to his sexual exploits, his shaking down foreign governments for millions of dollars, his role as a bagman for the Biden Crime Family, and god only knows what else. This is what Trump gets when he doesn't put the likes of Hillary Clinton in jail for all of her devious and illegal doings. I know that sounds a lot like going after your political enemies but she really is a crook. A crook's crook if you must know. Don't get me going on her pedo husband. You know, the guy with his own cabana on Epstein's now defunct private island. Yeah, that guy.

There is clearly a double standard in our justice system. If you're a democrat, you can go about your business and you don't have to worry about anybody sticking their nose where it doesn't belong. The media won't be looking into your crimes so no worries there. Our intelligence agencies not only look the other way but they actually act as enablers when they do what they do. Or, maybe more to the point, when they don't do what they're supposed to do. How the hell did we ever get to this point in our country? How do we now fix it? Can we ever get that genie back in the bottle? God help us if we can't.

I couldn't be more proud of the missus and the progress she's making on getting on up and out of her Covid-19 funk. She went to her stylist yesterday and stopped on the way home at LL Bean and maybe one other place. She may have even amazed herself since she couldn't stop talking about it. Maybe she was looking to me to push and encourage her even more to get out and about and stop hiding at home like a frightened turtle. Nothing would please me more than to see her back at her yoga classes and stopping by as she used to do at one or more of her favorite places to shop on her way home. That's just for starters.

Back in the Falls, Kathy Two-Trees was planning a night out with her children to celebrate her birthday. What about going out to the Red Lobster and ordering up lobster tails and god only knows what else doesn't say, happy birthday? She said something about it being a good three years since she's sat down to her favorite meal. I knew better, of course, since I was there just two years ago when she sat down to a lobster feast. I said nothing about knowing better and the conversation moved along as it always does when I ring her up. It was good to hear that her children were taking her out for the night. Not that I would have expected anything less, mind you.

The missus and I watched this show called "Generation Hustle" about scams, shams, and well, hustles. We're all familiar with the college entrance exam scandal involving that Singer guy and the coaches from of those elite colleges who were involved. That was one of the many episodes we watched the other night. I swear to god that I could have written that episode by doing nothing more than reading the headlines during the time it came to light. I was hoping for the story behind the story. I was hoping to hear about some of the lesser known characters caught up in the scheme but it was not to be. That would have been interesting.

Instead, we got headline names that were household names before it all came out in the press. Was anyone surprised that people of means would use those means to achieve ends to benefit their privileged spawn? Hardly. Was it titillating to see your favorite television reality stars in the headlines for reasons that had nothing to do with their performance on the big screen? I suspect that the answer to that is a resounding "yes." With so many others caught up in the sting, how is it that we've only heard about the household names involved?

Again, I want the story behind the story. Is that too much to ask? To make matters worse, the scam-man himself, Singer, has yet to be sentenced. He's walking around out there today without so much as an ankle bracelet. That has to get the goat of the people he turned against just knowing that he got a pass of sorts. That doesn't mean he won't be paying the piper. It just means that he hasn't yet paid the piper.

Singer did, after all, agree to work with the FBI to have these people implicate themselves in phone call after phone call until they had what they needed to arrest and convict the lot of them. Something tells me that Hollywood is getting back to normal after all of this without anyone, much less these losers, losing so much as a good night's sleep. Villains in Hollywood? Who knew?
